Baylor University is mourning the loss of its cherished black bear mascot, Lady, who passed away peacefully at the impressive age of 23. This extraordinary bear, who had become a symbol of the university’s spirit, was surrounded by her dedicated caregivers and veterinary staff during her last moments, providing a heartwarming reminder of the love she had received throughout her life.
The Miracle Bear
Lady was not just any bear; she was a miracle in her own right. She conquered two significant health challenges in 2019 and 2020, which required groundbreaking treatments never performed before on a black bear. Thanks to these treatments, Lady drew attention from the veterinary community, showcasing the dedication Baylor has for its animal residents.
Active, Curious, and Mischievous
Throughout her life, Lady was known for her playful spirit and curious nature. She loved to explore and often participated in fun activities that captivated the hearts of Baylor fans and animal lovers alike. Her vibrant personality made her a favorite among students, and her dynamic presence was felt during her visits to campus.
A New Home
In May 2023, just months before her passing, Lady retired to an off-campus facility where she could enjoy her golden years in peaceful comfort. However, even in retirement, she made special appearances for her fans, reminding everyone of the joy she had brought over the years. Born on January 31, 2002, at West Coast Game Park in Oregon, Lady arrived at Baylor in June 2002, leaving a lasting impression the moment she stepped into her new home.
Golden Years
In her later years, Lady received tailored care reflective of her age and health, ensuring that she enjoyed a comfortable life. Her sister Joy, who sadly passed away in July 2022, had been Lady’s faithful companion, and together, they were inseparable in the Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat. Despite Joy’s passing, Lady continued to shine as a beacon of hope and positivity.
Memorial Contributions
To honor Lady’s legacy and her significant contributions to Baylor University and the veterinary community, memorial contributions can be made to the Bear Habitat/Mascot Fund at baylor.edu/bear. The university plans to share details of opportunities for the community to celebrate Lady’s life and the memories she created.
